Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom speaks on… China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know

China is constantly in the news and in the presidential campaign, yet most of us have conflicting impressions and lack understanding of the Chinese perspective on the world. How did China transform itself from the consequences of such fiascos as the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward to become one of the world’s economic and political powerhouses in such a short time? Wasserstrom reveals that China today shares many traits with other industrializing nations, particularly the United States during its rapid industrialization in the 19th century. He provides guidance on the ways we can expect China to act in the future vis-à-vis the U.S., Russia, India, and its East Asian neighbors.

Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor’s Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine. An engaging and sought after speaker, he is the author or editor of numerous books, including two that he will be signing for this event: The Oxford History of Modern China and Eight Juxtapositions: China Through Imperfect Analogies...
